Flesch Limps in with Broken Putter

Cincinnati-born Steve Flesch used his wedge a lot more than he would have liked on the final three holes of the third round. After bogeying the par-3 15th, he broke his putter tossing it to his bag. He used his wedge to putt out on the final three holes. The results were about what you would expect around the difficult Firestone greens.

Bill Lunde chips in to win Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational

Bill Lunde was fighting his swing all day and the tough greens at Scarlet but opted to not putt on the last hole giving him the win at the 2008 Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational in Columbus. Lunde had bogied 16 and 17 after making double bogie on #2. After a wayward drive on 18 he hit his approach shot to the back left finge and proceeded to chip in for birdie and a 1 stroke victory.

Back Nine Gives Way to Lunde for 3rd round lead

Second round leader Peter Tomasulo began his day in the third round of the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational birdie, bogie, par, eagle and stood at 7 under par with a 2 stroke lead. Difficult course conditions kept him from holding the lead as he quickly made two bogies and another later in his round to finish at minus four for the tournament, three strokes back. Two golfers that fed off of the tough conditions and a friendship were Bill Lunde and Josh Broadaway. The golfers met years ago on the Hooters Tour and will play together for the second day in a row but now in the final group of the day. Both shot 67 which put Lunde in first place at 7 under par and and his Alabama buddy in a tie for second at 6 under par.

Amateur Golf Tour see new name at the top

In the Championship flight of the Amateur Golf Tour, John Fryman has been the man to beat all season long; having won all five tournaments he has played. On this day at Glenross GC Tim Ford was up to the challenge. Ford, in just his second event, took down Fryman with an even par round of 70. When asked how it felt to finally lose, Fryman replied: “I will not be upset with a 71.” Truer words were never spoken. The A Flight saw the return of Tyson Rahrig after a long layoff. Tyson put together a strong round by firing a four over par 74 to capture first place. The only other player to break 80 in the A flight was Ryan Richards, who shot 78. Richards made it very clear that his string of second place finishes is getting to him. “That’s three seconds in a row!” is all he could say after seeing the scores. The B Flight again only had three players competing for that first place trophy. Angel Padilla made it two in a row by firing an 83. In the C Flight Billy Chang shot 76 to win and Robert “The Tank” Burbridge won the D Flight by shooting 82.

5/28/08 West Lafayette, IN- The first day of the NCAA National Championships is in the books and Kent St. sits in fourth but could have led by four strokes with an average round from John Hahn. The round of the day belonged to Kent St. senior David Markle, shooting a 2 under par 70 to grab a share of the lead with Kevin Chappell (UCLA) and Tim Sluiter (USC). In Hahn's four previous competitive rounds at the Purdue University golf course (Kampen) he shot 73, 67, 68 and 70. Today, Hahn's score was so high it did not count toward the team total. He shot 83. Top eight team scores:

Field is set for 33rd Memorial Tournament

The biggest field in the history of the Memorial Tournament has been set for the 2008 version of the northern Masters. Lots of familiar Ohio faces will be on hand to compete as well as 8 of the top ten players in the world. As expected, Tiger Woods will not play this year due to injury; what was not expected was the decision of Adam Scott to withdraw from the event. Who to watch: Paul Azinger, one of the most exciting wins in Memorial history. Woody Austin, with lots of water in Dublin you never know. Briny Baird, we don't get to see hats like that too often in Ohio, except for Little Brown Jug week. K.J. Choi, no repeat winners since El Tigre'. Fred Couples, has mellowed with age and gotten over Greg Norman stealing one from him in the snow. Will he ask Jack for Presidents Cup magic advice? Ben Curtis, perhaps a return home will jump start his season. David Duval, near the end of the line- oh how we miss his game. Ernie Els, the modern day Gary Player that we all love to root for. If it was up to us Ernie, you'd win in a four hole playoff. Steve Flesch, on the Ohio Golfer of the Year watch list. Jim Furyk, having met his wife at the Memorial, he's become somewhat of an adopted son in Dublin. Sergio Garcia, looking to validate the Players Championship. J.B. Holmes, awesome! FBR Champ looks to get it going again with the Spider in Buckeye state. Trevor Immelman, WAKE UP!. Anthony Kim, if you want to see the future of golf walk with Kim, he's the real deal. Frank Lickliter II, an outstanding cuts made percentage, just needs to get in the winners circle. Phil Mickelson, welcome back lefty. Stay healthy and focus on the course- not Torrey Pines, you'll be amazed at what a win on Jack's farm could do for you in the locker room. Jon Mills, a Kent St. grad looking to carry the flag for Coach Page. Sean O'Hair, another one of the 20's kids that is great to watch. Hey Mr. Finchem- put Sean and Kim in the world championships. Joe Ogilvie- looking to run the tour one day? Travis Perkins, local boy comes home and desperately needs a good check to get season on track. Kenny Perry, a former winner looking for "points" to punch his ticket for the Ryder Cup train. Bob Sowards, he's told us several times that's hard to learn so many course in a short amount of time. The former assistant pro at Muirfield has nothing to learn at this course- time to put up or.... Camilo Villegas, he's got a bit of Kournicova in him but he's still fun to watch. Boo Weekley, the best ball striker in the field. When he learns Nicklaus used to hunt the property he may just put away the clubs and get his rifle. Brett Wetterich, told us in Hawaii he'd be here. We say he's got a real chance to win.

Tiger Woods passes on the Memorial

Throughout decision Friday the Tiger Woods website has shown the US Open as his next scheduled event. However, in the schedule section of the website the info shows "tbd", to be determined. It is believed he has chosen to wait to play his first tournament, after his latest knee surgery, at the US Open. The decision is a logical one. The terrain in Dublin, Ohio is fairly extreme and not the best of locations to test a newly repaired knee. Additionally, the 2008 US open is not at a traditional eastern or midwestern golf club. Played at Torrey Pines in California the grass, winds and time zone will all be drastically different than the players will experience in Ohio. A good call by Woods but one he could have announced several days ago.

Tiger Woods Playing the Memorial?

As of 10am the Tiger Woods camp has not made public whether Tiger will tee it up at Jack's tournament in Dublin, Ohio. Perhaps Tiger did not know a week or even two days ago if he would play in the event. For anyone to believe he does not know currently, if he's playing, is unrealistic. Has Norad seen his private plane headed North? Does his favorite McDonalds in Ohio have his place setting prepared? At the end of the day The Memorial does not need Tiger. Already 9 of the top 10 in world have committed to play, including a hot Garcia and Mickelson. Good luck to Tiger if he shows, but his handlers need to learn the show goes on with or without him. For them to hold the Memorial hostage on making the announcement is out of line and they should reconsider these types of actions in the future.

Bob Sowards will see PGA Tour bright lights for the first time

Bob Sowards it's all about getting comfortable. The problem is he's much more comfortable taking his daughter to school than playing on the PGA Tour. While most rookies are able to pace themselves during their trip to the show, Sowards was thrown right into the fire. He's had very little time to learn the golf courses on tour, something he believes is crucial to success. Sowards told Ohio's Golf that if he had been forced into a second day of US Open qualifying work (this past Monday) due to play-off or darkness he would have quit and headed to Georgia. Tuesdays are the only day he gets to see the course as he's not asked to play in too many pro-ams. Sowards has played his best golf of the year in the last three weeks. He says his switch back to Titleist wedges has helped. Today he'll be paired with former Masters champion Zach Johnson, tied for ninth at the AT&T Classic in Atlanta. Certainly, Sowards has come a long way but he has a great deal of work to do. Should he win about $200,000 this week he'll need 2-3 more significant finishes to keep his card for 2009. Sowards will play the Memorial in two weeks, on a course he knows better than the trip to his daughter's school.

On a cold and blustery day at the majestic Pinnacle Golf Club, Tony Mollica and Sean English shot 70, punching their ticket to the next stage. Eight qualifiers from this site now move to a 36 hole qualifier played at Brookside CC and the Scarlet golf course at Ohio St.. Bob Sowards and Cory George shot 72. Sowards said on this cold day, 72 was closer to 67 on a good day. The PGA Tour professional finished in the money the day before in Arkansas on the Nationwide Tour and was headed back to the PGA Tour for this week's event. Cory George, owner of Valley View GC in Lancaster, is headed to the Senior Ohio Open at Firestone. The Senior Ohio Open will be played this Wednesday and Thursday.
Oh what a week for Kent St. golf

Bryan DeCorso is in the midst of re-building his swing, it seems to be working quite well. In the last two weeks he has won over $130,000 on the Nationwide tour, including a win today at the South Georgia Golf Classic. DeCorso joined Ohio's Golf Newspaper publisher, Mike Hendrix on "Hanlin On Golf", WHK Radio and talked about his win. DeCorso said he was tired of his results not being good enough and committed to a new swing. DeCorso has been in and out of golf several times and at age 37 the Kent St. grad finds himself on a tour with exempt status for the first time in his career. He now stands at number four on the money list and if he finishes in the top 25 will receive exempt status on the PGA Tour in 2009. At the Wachovia Classic in North Carolina, Ben Curtis shot 65 to finish second and win $691,000+. Curtis birdied his first four holes and eagled 10 on his way to 32/33-65 for the second best round of the day. Earlier in the week the Kent St. women's golf team won the MAC tournament at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis. Today at the Longaberger Golf Club, the Kent St. men's team looked to finish up the MAC tournament in first place. Kent started the day with a four stroke lead over host Eastern Michigan. With three holes to play they trailed by four strokes with several golfers on the course. John Hahn finished with his usual strong play, birdieing the 18th. David Ludlow (Kent) birdied 16 and 17 to put Kent in front by one. Ludlow then made a double bogey on the 18th to let the championship slip into the hands of Eastern Michigan. An amazing week for NE Ohio golf to be sure.

Kent State freshman Brett Cairns (Courtland, Ontario) was named the Mid-American Conference Men’s Co-Golfer of the Week for a second time this season in an announcement made by the league office late Wednesday. The Golden Flashes have now had a student-athlete GOW award winner after the last eight tournaments, including all five events this spring. Cairns, who shared the honor along with Zach Jecklin of Northern Illinois, shot a final round 69 to finish in a tie for second and help Kent State to their second straight team title at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate event that featured seven MAC schools. His one-under 69 in the afternoon was one of only two sub par performances in the second round as the winds began to heighten after a brief rain delay. He ranked third in the tournament with 28 pars, one behind the leaders. Cairns also was tied for third with a 4.04 average on the par fours. The freshman now has two runner-up and four top 20 finishes this season. Earlier this season he received the award after a second place showing at the Bridgestone Collegiate Championship in October.
The COLUMBUS DIVISION of THE EGOLF AMATEUR TOUR held their opening event of the 2008 season on Saturday, April 19 at the Cook’s Creek Golf Club in Ashville, Ohio. Cook’s Creek golf course is difficult to play in ideal conditions, but the cool and rainy conditions with a light wind made the day especially tough. The scores posted are an indication of the quality of players and the competitive environment on the Columbus Amateur Golf Tour. The course was in excellent condition and the staff was excellent hosts for this event. The event included forty-six players for the first stop of 2008 and more are expected for the next event at Royal American Links. John Fryman from Lewis Center, OH took the Championship Flight with a score of 74. Troy Boswell from Reynoldsburg, OH finished second with an 80 while Eugene White from West Jefferson, OH finished third with an 81. Fryman used four birdies and a laser like driver to capture his first win of 2008. Fryman proved his mettle last year and is on the watch list for top Ohio amateur of 2008.

Opening Day 2008 at Elks Run turned out to be a test for most golfers in the field. The combined average score for the event was 100.6 strokes. But good scores and good shots were found along the way. The low gross round of the tournament was turned in by Nick Francis who fired an 82. Michael Bowen recorded the 2nd regular season hole-in-one in OVGA History, knocking it home on the par 3 12th hole. Opening Day belonged to the rookies as all three flights were claimed by 1st year players. In-all, 35 rookies were in the field for the event, making up for 48% of the total field. In the Nicklaus Flight, Cole Cartwright outlasted Eric McGahey in a one-hole playoff (determined by net score on #1 handicapped hole, Cartwright 3, McGahey 4). James Frisby, Rich Lakes and David Johnson finished one shot back. In the Palmer Flight, Trevor Gummere won his first OVGA event in a one-hole playoff over Matt Berry (determined by net score on the #1 handicapped hole, Gummere 4, Berry 5). Gummere and Berry were the only players to shoot sub-90 rounds in the Palmer Flight. Doug Hart finished a shot back and Todd Jones, Allan Bevans, John Pikunas and Jeff Krohmer were 2 shots off the pace. In the Hogan Flight, Brian Brooks didn't need a playoff to secure his first OVGA win. Brooks came in with a net 73 to finish one stroke ahead of Aaron Caudill.
Golfweek publication rates Ohio

In the world of publications it is understood that no idea or even content remains the property of the creator for long. We as a publication have taken the stance that when larger publications "dip" into our discoveries we should quickly get past the sting and smile at the approval our brethren bestow upon us with their similarities. To that point we applaud those that followed us with stories about Mollie Fankhauser and Bob Sowards and now congratulate BUD EPPLEY of Black Diamond GC and MAX BROWN of Rattlesnake Ridge for landing their golf courses on the Golfweek top 10 ten list of Ohio public access golf courses...perhaps Golfweek missed the fact that Rattlesnake Ridge is private. That bogey aside, we are proud to have featured 4 of the top ten in our first 13 months of publication. The Ohio list has a real Home Depot "do it yourself" feel as 3 of the ten were either designed or built by the owner of the course. #1- Longaberger, #2- Shaker Run, #3- Stonelick Hills, #4- Boulder Creek, #5- Avalon G&CC, #6- StoneWater, #7- Cook's Creek, #8- Black Diamond, #9- Aston Oaks, #10- Rattlesnake Ridge.

It is not often that any golfer starts their round with an eagle. For a journeyman player in Guatemala City to eagle his first hole and shoot 86 is one remarkable story. B.J. Pitzen by all accounts has never quite found his stride on a professional golf tour. He was the only Ohio player to travel with the Hooters Tour to South America in search of some good money and maybe the hot sun. His first round 76 included two double bogies but considering the greens were said to be as difficult as Oakmont CC he was positioned well for a run at victory. As the tournament wore on Pitzen made the cut but continued to fade from the field. His last day can only be recapped with the scorecard below. Yes that is a nine on the same card as an eagle and yes he did record 11 holes of bogie or worse. B.J. finished last but was won our attention for the remainder of the season.

Chris Wilson has surfaced on the Hooters Tour after failing to pass PGA Tour Q-school. Wilson made a very strong showing shooting 67 in the final round, the low round of the day. His play moved him from T24 to finishing T8. Wilson's round included ten threes and just one bogie. Wilson earned $2,279.00 and has begun to fulfill his college coaches prophecy of playing mini tours in 2008 and passing Q-school in December of the same...

Rod Spittle, Gary Trivisonno and Dick Mast all attempted to Monday qualify for the Champions Tour Allianz Championship. Spittle, considered by many as the top qualifier status player in the country, has now missed the cut in his first two attempts of 2008. Spittle shot 3 under 69 and is slatted as the fourth alternate behind the likes of Mike Donald, Kenny Knox and upstate New York native Mark Balen. Trivisonno shot 76, finishing second to last and Dick Mast, who qualified in Hawaii shot 71,...

Lickliter ll looks for first win of 2008

While most Ohio residents are anxious to watch the Super Bowl as a tonic for the BCS championships of the last two years, Frank Lickliter ll hopes the big game is a small part of a celebration that's been a long time coming. Lickliter ll has two new mouths to feed with the early arrival of twins Storm and Steele and seems to have returned to the form that won him medalist honors at the 2008 season Q-school. Lickliter fired consecutive 62's to start Q-school and this week has made 6 birdies in each of the first two rounds but in round two he erased 4 bogies and trails the leaders by just one stroke. Lickliter will play in the third to last group with Nick O'Hern and Charles Warren. The FBR Open has been plagued by delayed starts due to frost and has moved starting times back which may prevent the leaders from finishing round three on...

Ben Curtis Looks to Make First Cut of 2008

Ben Curtis got off to a quick start in the second round of the FBR Open making birdie on three of his first six holes. Curtis chose not to play in the first few opening tournaments of the 2008 PGA Tour schedule. When he did begin his season and quest for the FedEx cup at the Buick Invitational he missed the cut. He then played a more than nationwideesq opening round in Phoenix at the FBR. After looking at Curtis' stats to start 2008 one could become alarmed to see he did not three putt a single hole at Torrey Pines (Buick) and still did not stick around for the weekend. That may have indicated swing issues that usually are not a quick fix. After shooting 67 today Curtis can feel much more assured that his season does have promise and his goal of a Ryder Cup berth is still within....
